Dear  Parents

A warm welcome to all our new boys and parents at Bishops!  We are delighted to share this new and exciting journey with you. Thank you to all those parents who have ensured that their boys are neatly dressed and have had sensible haircuts.  A reminder to new parents, we do not allow fashion cuts but rather a simple boys haircut, with no long fringes.  In this heat, it is much easier to manage and of course uses less water to wash!

We would like to welcome Mrs Cindy Anstey to our Grade 2 group at the Pre-Prep.  She has been one of the Grade 3 teachers at Bishops for many years and we are delighted to have her join us.  Mrs Carmen van Zyl has returned from maternity leave and we are equally delighted to have her back.

Our Grade R teachers had their parent meeting last night.  It was wonderful to see you all again.  Parent meetings are an opportunity for parents to come and listen to a short chat by the teacher, unpacking the expectations for the year and a great opportunity for you to ask any questions that you may have.  Grade 1 and 2 teachers will explain the homework routine so that it is easy once homework is sent home. Please may I encourage you to make every effort to have both, or one parent present at this important meeting.  It is not a long evening and starting at 6pm, should take about an hour.  Please see the diary dates or online calendar for when your Grade is meeting.  The link to our online calendar is available on the Pre-Prep Website.

All afternoon sport will commence Monday afternoon, 22 January.  Please ensure that all items of school uniform and afternoon kit is clearly marked.  It is also important to clearly mark water bottles and lunch boxes.  A gentle reminder that boys who do not have the correct kit, will sit and watch the practice so that they will not miss out on the skills being explained.  An email or note in the diary is necessary to excuse boys from an afternoon activity.  Boys are not excused from sport for playdates or party invitations.  A hat is an essential part of the sports kit.  May we urge you to please purchase plain white takkies which are worn with whites for extra murals.

All sport online sign up needs to be done by the end of today, please. We need to prepare registers and make sure we have sufficient coaches to start the new week.  For other activities that are offered by outside coaches, please go to the Pre-Prep website, look under the sport tab and on the drop down bar, select the one you are interested in.

The water crisis in the Western Cape continues to affect all of us and sadly “Day zero” is fast approaching. Level 6B water restrictions will be in place from 1 February and these are very severe. Bishops is fully committed to managing water and a number of municipal water reduction measures are being implemented throughout all campuses. Please note that sport remains a fundamental part of our education process for boys and is integral to our offering at Bishops and for both educational and safety reasons we will continue to water pitches, fields and hockey astro and fill our swimming pools with borehole water. This will happen at appropriate times when there is less evaporation and every effort will be made not to over use borehole water. Ornamental gardens will be manually managed after 6pm in the evenings on a rotational basis.

We are currently assessing which toilets on campus are in key locations (Boarding Houses, specific classroom precincts and selected sports venues) and their water source will be changed from municipal water to borehole water.

There is a cocktail function next Thursday evening, 25 January @ 6pm for all NEW PARENTS to Bishops.  This would include all Grade N parents and the new parents who have joined the Grade R group this year along with the couple of extra parents whose boys have joined Grade 1 or 2 this year.  It is just an opportunity to meet socially and welcome you to the school.  This function will be held at Stanmore Cottage, at the Prep School, Fir Road, Rondebosch.  Security will direct you when you arrive.  We look forward to seeing you all there.

We would like to remind parents that when dropping off ANYTHING at school, this should be done via the school office.  Please do not walk straight to the classrooms or locker rooms as this is very disruptive to the classes.

2017 was an exceptional year for the Bishops Trust and with the 175 Campaign well underway, we are looking forward to what 2018 holds.

Congratulations to all the 2017 Matrics on their fantastic results; the boys have done us and themselves proud.  It is to maintain these levels of excellence that we constantly strive to better the School and its facilities, and if we are to play an integral role in transforming our beloved country, opportunities for this level of education must be made available for deserving boys from underprivileged communities.  Please contact the Trust Office for information on the Hamilton Mvelase Bursary Fund.

Dr Michael Mol will be addressing parents on the topic "Add Years to Your Life and Life to Your Years" on 31 January 2018 at the Memorial Theatre from 08:45 - 10:30.  A light healthy breakfast will be served.  Tickets are R250 and all proceeds will be donated to the Hamilton Mvelase Bursary Fund.  For more information please contact Nikki Matthews

For enquiries, please contact Catherine Rheeder:

We want to thank Ant Smythe from 'Thats Me' photography for his first week pics!   I hope you took the opportunity to have your photograph taken to commemorate the start of the new year.  The link to where you can view and order will be emailed to you shortly.  They will be back later this term to take individual photographs of all the boys.

We would like to invite any interested parents to join our morning prayer meetings which are held on a Thursday morning just after 7:30 in the art room.  Mr Woolls will be leading this fabulous group so if you have any queries, please feel free to chat to him or email him on

We encourage parents to please use the top gate for dropping off and picking up boys.  Although this is communal parking area and can be frustrating at times, it is safer for boys to wait inside the gates, in the area outside the hall after school.  Any boys not collected after waiting 10 minutes will be signed into aftercare.

Wishing you an exciting and sucessful year ahead!

Yours sincerely,

Head of Pre-Prep
