Dear  Parents

What an awesome week we have had. We were inundated with many Valentines on Tuesday and we thank you for your contributions to our collections. To our class reps and other helpers who decorated our school, we are so grateful. What a beautiful display of love on which so many commented. Your support is so appreciated.

We have had the most overwhelming response to our bag and deodorant collection.  I will share the exact number of how many we collected in our newsletter next week, as well as post pictures of the recipients so that you are able to share in the joy they experienced on receiving them!  An enormous thank you to each, and every, family that contributed to this collection.

Please be reminded about Sandwich Tuesday.   An extra sandwich or two would be fabulous.  These may be handed in at various collection points throughout the school, and are distributed to Athwood Primary School.

Some of our swimmers will be competing in a gala next Thursday.  Ms Fry would have notified those concerned and we wish them all the best for their respective races.

We have had many requests from parents regarding the hiring of facilities for outside parties.  Unfortunately, our hall and playground facilities are not for use or hire over weekends or afternoons. Should you have any further queries as to venues available,  please contact Mrs Rosemary Wilke on rwilke@bishops.org.za

Our athletes were exceptional at our Quadrangular Athletics meeting this week. To each, and every, boy who participated, we congratulate you on your performance and fantastic achievements.

A friendly reminder that if your son is unable to attend any after school activity, please contact the coach/teacher to excuse them. If boys are not excused, it results in coaches/teachers spending time looking for boys who are not there. Also, please note that birthday parties and playdates are not reasons accepted as excuses for missing any extra mural activities.

Meet your new BISHOPS PRE PREP and PREP PARENTS ASSOCIATION TEAM for 2017

Please feel free to contact any of your PA members at anytime.  Email: sampet711@icloud.com

The School Photo's are all available online and parents have been sent an email from 'thatsme" photographers. Should the email have been sent to your junk email kindly note that you can access the photo's online at www.thatsme.co.za

Kindly note that parents who have not yet been issued with 'car disks" - we are anticipating their arrival sometime next week.  As soon as we receive them, we will ensure that each family receives two disks.

We appeal to parents to please be sensible about what watches they allow their boys to wear to school. These items are often taken off, left in lockers, on benches or in the classroom.  We have noticed that some of these items cost well over R1 000.  Please can we ask that such watches are not sent to school for the boys to wear, but alternately an ordinary one that tells the time (preferably analogue) just as efficiently. The school cannot be held responsible for lost items such as this, and nor should little boys be worried about having to look after such expensive watches.  Thank you for your support in this appeal.

Please see below from our Marketing Department:

"Dear Parents

Bishops are currently filming a marketing video and were given the go ahead last year to do this.  We did ask any parent who did not want their son to appear in these videos to please contact marketing@bishops.org.za with name, surname and grade so we could erase those sections.

As there are new boys at Bishops in 2017, this is a follow up message asking if you do not want your son to appear please let me know asap.  If you have already told me, but wish to confirm, that would be very kind of you.

Many thanks

Rosemary Wilke

Found:  We have a camping chair at Pre Prep which was possibly left behind after last year's Carol Evening.  It has the initials "CMS" at the back of it.  Should anyone be missing this chair kindly contact Nicky in the office: nvanzyl@bishops.org.za

For those parents of little ones coming home and when asked, get the answer "we just played" here is a useful bit of information for you.  Written by paediatric occupational therapist, Angela Hanscom: "Preschool years are not only optimal for children to learn through play, but also a critical developmental period.  If children are not given enough natural movement and play experiences, they start their academic careers with a disadvantage.  They are more likely to be clumsy, have difficulty paying attention, trouble controlling their emotions, utilize poor problem-solving methods, and demonstrate difficulties with social interactions.  We are consistently seeing sensory, motor, and cognitive issues pop up more and more in later childhood, partly because of inadequate opportunities to move and play and an early age".  So when we say we do not teach children to read or write until they are ready for formal learning in Grade 1, take some time to read the research and let your children play.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Yours sincerely,
